3 Home Remedies for Natural Hair

By on October 24, 2015

With shelves full of products for natural hair, we can start to feel overwhelmed with the variety of hair products being offered. However, the great thing about having natural hair is using natural products to enhance our hair’s manageability. Items you may have on hand for cooking or baking can double as excellent hair moisturizers and sealants. Which items can be used?

Olive Oil and Honey

Use as a Hot Oil Treatment. Part hair into sections; mix ½ cup (or more) olive oil and ¼ cup honey. Microwave at 10 second intervals in a bowl. Transfer warm mixture into a spray bottle. Distribute throughout hair sections and sit with a plastic cap under dryer for 20-30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

ACV removes scaly build-up and residue from hair, giving hair more shine. By closing the cuticles, the hair slides more easily resulting in fewer tangles. ACV can also help relieve dry, itchy scalp. After shampooing hair, add ACV (diluted with 1 part ACV to 3 parts water) to a spray bottle. Apply from root to tip and rinse out. Due to the higher acidity in ACV, this process should only be repeated every 2-4 weeks.

Use any brand of regular mayonnaise the same you would a conditioner. Apply to damp hair from root to tip. Cover with a plastic cap; leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse. The results should be shiny, moisturized, more manageable hair.

As you try these home remedies, keep in mind that every head of hair is different and results will vary. Here’s hoping that you find at least one thing on this list that will save you another trip to the hair care aisle.
